Yoga for People who Hate Yoga

Updated: Sep 20

Confession time: I hate yoga. 😅

Yes, even as a yoga teacher, there are moments when I find myself dreading my practice or struggling through a class. It’s not something you often hear from someone in my position, but it’s the truth. There are times when deep feelings of hatred, boredom, and even resentment bubble up while I’m on the mat.

Take vinyasa, for example. Good Lord, I’m the one peeking through every Downward Dog, sneaking glances at the clock, counting down the minutes until this experience will finally be over. 🐶⏳

Then there’s Kundalini yoga—an entirely different beast. The endless, vigorous arm movements designed to raise the heart rate and circulate the lymph feel like their own form of punishment. And don’t get me started on the infamous stretch pose. If you’ve done it, you know the struggle! 😓 Holding that pose for even a minute can feel like an eternity, but in teacher training, we had to hold it for 11 minutes straight. It was grueling, to say the least.

Check out my video above of the dreaded stretch pose. This challenging pose may just push all your hate-yoga buttons, and will certainly strengthen your core, and develop the navel power of your 3rd chakra, the source of your willpower and your personal power - the fire in your belly!

Despite all the discomfort, yoga keeps pulling me back. I love pushing myself to the edge of what I thought was possible and then breaking through that boundary. I love the physicality of it, the way it challenges me and forces me to be fully present. The intensity, the mystery, the journey—it’s all part of what makes yoga so compelling to me. 🌟

Yoga is often described as a mirror for life. The way we are on the mat often reflects the way we are off the mat. For me, yoga has been a reminder that I am dramatic, intense, passionate, peaceful, and deeply drawn to life’s mysteries. 🌿✨

I know I’m not alone in feeling this way. I think many of us experience this paradoxical relationship with yoga—hating it one moment and loving it the next. And that’s okay. It’s all part of the journey.

What about you? Have you ever found yourself loving and hating yoga at the same time? I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences. Feel free to leave a comment below or reach out to me directly.
